Agra is a developed industrial city in the state of Uttar
Pradesh. The Nunhai and Achnera are two important industrial estates
in Agra. The industrial units in Agra produce electrical goods,
fans, pipes, cast iron castings, leather goods and shoes, steel
rolling, packing and milk products. A total of 7,200 units produce
materials like cotton and textile, wood paper products and
stationery, leather goods, metal products, auto and engine parts,
electrical goods etc.
The leather works of Agra are famous throughout India. The works
have been derived from traditional practices that included producing
foot wear. Agra and Kanpur produce some of the finest leather goods
in Uttar Pradesh state. The leather products consist of shoes,
sandals, jackets, gloves, handbags, wallets, etc. The leather works
have been refined in more recent times and at present there is a
great demand of designer items.
The official figures of the shoe industry output stands at whooping
one and a half lac pairs. The shoes manufacturing units occupy the
apex position in the leather works. There are about 60 organized
footwear units in Agra city. A good number of household artisans are
employed in shoe making. The city has about 70 exporting units of
the industry and many of them have earned a good reputation in
international markets.
Leather apparels are popular all over the region. Leather jackets,
belts and handbags produced in the city circulate through local as
well as national markets. The latest development of producing trendy
outfits have given a fillip to the leather manufacturing units. With
the total export turn of about 450 crore one can conjecture the
position of leather industry and to a good extent the quality of
stuff produced in the region.
